Challenging, but enjoyable Mathematics!

This year, Sheffield High School has seen a record number of certificates achieved in the three National Mathematics Challenges, which took place throughout the year.

Of the 111 certificates gained, there were 23 Gold, 38 Silver and 50 Bronze certificates. Attaining some of the highest marks in the country, a selection of the Gold certificate winners were entered into the next national stage of the competition called the Olympiad or Pink Kangaroo. The Best in School awards went to Robyn Horne (Y8), Sijung Cho (Y11)and Victoria Chia (Y11). Sijung achieved the highest overall mark and was entered into the the McLauren stage and gained a certificate of merit. Congratulations to all the girls.

In February, six groups of pupils from all age ranges in the school took part in the Sheffield Hallam University Pop Quiz. Billed as the ‘non-alcoholic maths pub quiz’, 50 schools entered teams to battle against each other for prizes. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by both pupils and staff.

April saw all year 7 pupils take part in a full day of challenging and enjoyable mathematical activities. Working in small groups, they tackled several tasks including code-breaking number puzzles.

During the year, groups of girls from Y7-10 have been attending the lunchtime Gifted and Talented Maths Club and enjoying some very interesting and challenging mathematics questions and puzzles. Five girls in Y10 entered a national competition this summer where they used ICT to present a mathematical solution to a global issue using real-world data. Lauren Potter, Katie Wensley, Dehenna Davison, Naomi Andrews and Charlotte Edwards await news of whether they have made it through to the final round of the competition.
