Sheffield High School

Welcome

Charitable Activities

We have once again had a very successful time for charities in the school year 2010-2011 which has seen our fundraising total top £22,000, the highest ever recorded in school.

Supporting Jhum Para School in Bangladesh
Our non-uniform day for Jhum Para, our school in Bangladesh, raised over £600, taking the total we have sent this academic year to Bangladesh to over £1000. This means we can continue helping 48 children go to school who wouldn’t otherwise have an education. We are also providing some of them with rice this year as the harvest has again been poor.

One of our Year 7 pupils left before the end of this term to go to Bangladesh with our donation of £150 to buy blankets, hopefully one each for our sponsored children and some for the elderly relatives as well, as nights can be really cold in Bangladesh. We hope this year to be able to purchase a computer for the school as electricity has, at last arrived at Jhum Para- enough to operate a wind-up computer. At our Carol Service this week at Ranmoor Church we raised over £750, half of which will be go to Jhum Para.

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice
Our stall for Bluebell Wood raised over £225, and the Sixth Form and staff raffled a cuddly Reindeer and Bear for Bluebell Wood too. Lots of girls walked, jogged or ran the Race for Life, or walked – for Bluebell Wood.

South Yorkshire Eating Disorders Association
Several forms have supported SYEDA, raising £400.

Peter’s Commute
The Peter’s Commute team of 19 students and 19 staff walked into school from 6 miles away to raise money for a school in Zimbabwe where students often walk much further than this to get an education. At the time of writing, over £2000 has been raised.

Singing for Charity
Ms Wallace and Chamber Choir deserve special mention for their support for Lost Chord, a Dementia Charity, and their singing has raised over £3000.

Chamber Choir sang again for Lost Chord, in the Cathedral in the run-up to Christmas, raising over £3000 and they and the Sixth Form Choir have also been singing in Meadowhall, raising over £500.

Support for Oxfam in Kenya
Recently we supported the Oxfam appeal for East Africa, raising over £150 which will go to support those in the refugee camps in Kenya and provide clean water. Many forms are sponsoring an animal through the World Wide Fund for Nature, and these range from pandas, polar bears, Amur leopards and a bottle-nosed dolphin. We also raised £80 for the Kenyan orphanage which Annabella and Ellie Needham visited last year.

Royal National Institute for the Blind
Year 7 raised their best total ever for Read-On, over £2800, for the RNIB

Children in Need
We celebrated Children in Need 2011 with cakes, sweets and lots of people going silent for Pudsey, raising over £1000.

Breast Cancer Research
We went pink in October for Breast Cancer Research, raising £500.

St Luke’s Hospice
At our annual pre-Christmas Craft Fayre, charities were well represented and Ella Jackson in Year 11 ran a stall for St Luke’s Hospice raising over £150.

SMILE
Aaminah Akhtar and Emma Liversidge ran a stall for SMILE, which enables children born with cleft palates to receive life-changing treatment. They raised £150, which will pay for a child in Africa to have the necessary surgery.

Sheffield Children’s Hospital
Ashleigh Fletcher raised over £150 with a sponsored walk for the Children’s Hospital, and Lucy Bower equalled this with her stall on the Link selling Christmas stockings.

At our Carol Service at Ranmoor Church we raised over £750, half of which will go to the Children’s Hospital.

Alzheimers’ Society
Rosie and Israel raised £38 for the Alzheimers’ Society.

World Aids Day
Year 10 sold red ribbons for World Aids Day, raising £50

Poppy Appeal 2011
Our Poppy Appeal for the first time raised over £100, and we completely filled the two collecting tins!

Support for Smaller Local Charities
We have been delighted to support small local charities as well this year, including –

  • Weston Park Hospital
  • the Yorkshire Cancer Centre and
  • the MS Therapy Centre

The School couldn’t do this without the support of pupils and staff and particular thanks go to the charity representatives for all their hard work during the year.
