Our Environmental Impact

Sheffield High – proud holders of the environmental ‘Green Flag’ for the second time!

Sheffield High School is proud to announce that we have been awarded the ‘Green Flag’ for the second time from the Government’s Eco Schools Scheme. To maintain our ‘Green Flag’ status, we have continued to make a positive contribution to various aspects of the environment including recycling, raising awareness of environmental issues, improving energy efficiency in school and working with the local community to improve local spaces.

Our Sixth Form Eco-group and Senior School form Eco-Reps continue to be active is this process, but have been joined by a new team in the Junior School. The Eco-Schools’ assessor who visited us recently spent over 2 hours being shown round by the Eco-Reps of all ages and he praised our “enthusiastic students” who are “leading the way with visions of what they want to achieve”. He also congratulated us on how we had introduced the eco-schools programme to the Junior School, commenting that this endeavor has been “a great success”.

SHS ‘Eco-Schools’ Blossoms in the Junior School

The eco-schools ethos has flourished in the Junior School in recent months. A particular focus for our current projects centres around plans to develop the area of land to the rear of the canteen to create a more usable space with eco-friendly themes. Members of the Sixth Form Eco-Group have worked with the Junior School Eco Prefects to design plans for this area and we are eager to start work over the coming months. In our recent ‘Green Flag’ assessment, the assessor commented that our plans for this area “look fantastic”.

In the Community

We also continue to support environmental initiatives within the wider community. Since being presented with the award for “Most Environmentally-Friendly Secondary School”, jointly with Westfield School, at the Sheffield Telegraph Environment Awards in 2009, we continue to play a part in recognising environmental achievements locally. Sheffield High School has sponsored the award for environmentally-friendly work within the community at the Telegraph Environment Awards for the last two years. The link below is to the information about the most recent winners.

Read all about it!

We have been making progress with our educational work using a book called the Adventures of Eco-Man, which was written by former pupils in 2010. After fundraising for sponsorship from HSBC, we have printed the book and pupils are looking forward to visiting primary schools across the city to use the book to pass on ideas on how to be more environmentally friendly.

Below is a summary of our past and current eco-projects:

Past Projects
• Creating an ‘Eco Code’ which we ask pupils and staff to follow. Follow this link to see our new junior school version, which was created with help from the 6th form eco-group.
• Placing Hippos in all of the school toilets to conserve water. These are ingenious devices which reduce the amount of water used per flush.
• Creating the new position of Eco Rep in every form, responsible for ensuring the new paper recycling facilities are used to their fullest extent
• Running a Nature Group at Sheffield High Junior School
• Creating an Eco Group notice board and holding school assemblies to keep the school updated about our progress
• Have our Sixth Form Block renovated to become more environmentally friendly with state of the art innovations to aid re-cycling, reduce energy consumption and respect the environment
• Encouraged more environmentally friendly travel methods such as the Bike to Work scheme for staff and the walking bus for junior pupils
• Made re-cycling much easier with paper re-cycling bins in all classrooms, water fountains for pupils so that plastic bottles can be re-used and paperless communication with parents using SchoolComms and the SIMs parent gateway

Current and Future Projects – Follow our progress by reading our Blog
• Continue to monitor and reduce our energy consumption. See our energy costs graph
• Develop our links with other schools, both in the UK and internationally, to share good practice using the eco-man book project
• Continuing to hold an annual Eco Day to raise money for environmental charities
• Develop a nature garden within the Junior School beside the canteen with the Junior Nature Group
• Investigating renewable sources of energy for the school such as solar power.
