Record Breaking GCSE and A-level Results!

Our students’ exam results have once again broken all our previous records at both A-level and GCSE.

Record-breaking GCSE results – 82% of grades at A* and A

At GCSE, a stunning 82% of the grades awarded were A*/A – the best ever at Sheffield High School – and 7% above the previous high, with 74% of our Year 11 girls gaining A* or A grades in all their subjects. The national figure for A*/A grades is just under 22%. Our overall pass rate was 99.3%, compared with the rate nationally of 67%.

Seven girls get all A* GCSE grades

Seven of our students gained 10 A* grades at GCSE and 22 students overall achieved nine or ten A* grades in their subjects. Our three youngest students sitting GCSE examinations, aged between 13 and 14, each gained A* grades. Our ‘all 10 A* stars’ were Noor Barotchi, Catherine Bi, Thalia Caddy, Emily Gaines, Henrietta Hill, Lauren Potter and Katie Wensley.

Commenting on the results, Head Valerie Dunsford said: “I am absolutely delighted with these results and I am extremely proud of what the pupils and staff have achieved. With well over half of our students achieving nine A*/A grades at GCSE, the performance of our girls has been quite breathtaking.”

Sports Stars

Our ‘Sports Stars’, who notched up their ‘all A star grades’ at GCSE (not surprisingly with PE as one of them) are –

Lauren Potter from Millhouses who was selected this year not only to play for the England Under 17 Netball Team but also to captain the side in the Under 17 Netball European Championships held in Gibraltar. Lauren came back a very proud captain with a gold medal as the England team took the European title, winning all games! Not only has she just passed with ten A* grades, but she is also celebrating the news that she has just been selected for the England Under 19 training squad!

Thalia Caddy from Ranmoor has managed to achieve ten A stars whilst also training hard on trampolining. She bounced her way to become the runner up in all three rounds of the National Schools Championships and helped the School team to achieve 2nd in the country in the Under 19 category

Emily Gaines from Millhouses and Katie Wensley from Fulwood (again ten stars-a-piece) are both South Yorkshire Hockey players and were in the school touring party that went to play in Barbados. Katie is also on the South Yorkshire Netball Talent Development Academy

Noor Barotchi, a rounders enthusiast from Whirlow, passed her subjects in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Art & Design, French, English Literature, English Language, Maths, Geography and Arabic

Performing Arts Stars

Our performing arts stars are:

Henrietta Hill from Bakewell is a debating champion who won the North of England Girls’ Day School Trust debating round, qualifying on to the National Finals. She is grade 8 in violin and plays in the School Orchestra. Henrietta passed her ten A stars, one of which was music, taken at the age of 15

Catherine Bi from Rotherham is also a keen musician, playing piano to grade 7. She passed her ten A stars at GCSE, one of which was also music, taken at the age of 15

Young Stars at Sheffield High School

All the girls at Sheffield High School who sat an early GCSE examination all passed with A*! The youngest
Sheffield High pupil to pass her early GCSE is Mazarine Yousefpour, aged 12 from Millhouses who passed French at A*. Anastasia Paschali aged 14, from Broomhill passed her Modern Greek at A* and Jenny Guan from Ecclesall, also aged 14, has her A* in Chinese. Our set of young linguists was completed by 15 year old Georgia Azzi getting her A* in GCSE Italian.

Super Sisters

The Hill sisters achieved straight As – 14 in total between them, following the excellent A-level results last week. Henrietta has completed the Hill family celebrations as she achieved 10 passes in her GCSE examinations – all at A*! Last week Verity discovered that she had passed her A-levels of English Language, Music and Geography with straight A’s with another grade A in AS History and she is now off to study Primary Education at Durham.

Record-breaking A-level results – 83% of results at grades A or B

The previous week had already seen record-breaking results for Sheffield High School, with 83% of our A-level results at grades A or B. The national figure is 52%. Just under 58% of our girls gained grade A in their subject, compared to 27% nationally. This performance tops last year’s superb results when 80% gained grades A or B and just under 50% gained grade A! And, amazingly this year, almost half our students achieved straight ‘A’ grades across all their subjects!

Strengths in Maths and Science

Once again the girls at Sheffield High have shown that they can buck the national trend at A-level, with large numbers of them achieving outstanding results in Maths and the Sciences, with Biology and Chemistry being the subjects with the largest uptake at the school. All our Oxbridge candidates have secured places in their chosen field.

The Further Maths students at Sheffield High are celebrating their results together as every one of the group not only achieved grade A in further maths but they also all achieved 5 grade A’s each! They are –

Alison Andrew, who is off to Cambridge to read Economics after a gap year teaching in a children’s home in Bangladesh. She achieved grade ‘A’ in Geography, Physics, Maths and Further Maths A-levels with Art & Design AS-level. This year, Alison has also won the GDST Travel Scholarship, she was Highly Commended for the Trust Somerville and Gurney Award and runner up in the Minerva Award

Nicola Chan-Lam, who is the U18 National Singles Badminton Champion, is off to read Maths and Actuarial Science at Manchester with her five grade As in German, Maths, Further Maths and Physics. She also has a grade ‘A’ in Sports Studies at AS-level

Isabel Henley is off to Durham to read maths, having gained her grade A results in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths with AS-level History

Amy Ruddleston from Wickersley, Rotherham has gained a place at Edinburgh University to study Engineering. She gained five grade A results in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths at A-level and AS-level History

Head Girl, Taj Tomouk, from Sheffield has achieved 5 grade A’s and a merit in the Advanced Extension Award in Biology! The talented all-rounder, who has competed in athletics and hockey for the School, is going on to study medicine at Cambridge following her resounding success in achieving grade A’s in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths with AS-level German

Wen Jun Zhu is the last of the Further Maths group and her success is perhaps the most remarkable. She joined the school in Year 11 from China knowing with little English and with no family here, just staying with a

guardian and then latterly living independently. She took GCSEs in a few subjects and then embarked on A-levels. Wen Jun passed her Further Maths, Maths, Chinese and Chemistry all at grade A and also AS-level Economics.

International Tennis Player off to the USA on a Scholarship

Sheffield tennis player Annabel Gledden, one of the country’s brightest prospects, has got the chance to further her tennis prowess at a top US University. Annabel has been offered a four year academic/sports full scholarship at the crack Santa Barbara University in California. Today she is celebrating her straight As in her A-levels in English Language, History and Sports Studies with her fourth in General Studies at AS-level.

Eleven Year Old Gains Grade A in her Japanese AS-level

Year 6 Junior School pupil at Sheffield High School, Emily Hogg, aged eleven from Middlewood passed her AS-level Japanese with a grade A! This followed last year’s A* in Japanese GCSE which she passed at the tender age of 10. Meanwhile, Year 10 pupil Verity Bridge passed her AS-level French two years early at the age of 15.
