Science Week - March 9–13
(Please note that these events are open only to students of Sheffield High School)
Once again we have a number of activities taking place in Science week. Some will take part during lessons and others at lunchtime. So take a look at what is available and come and get involved!
- The Great Bridge Building Challenge – 12 March
This is a design, make and test activity for all Y8 students. Engineers, who are recent graduates, from The Scott Wilson Group will join us to set the challenge and offer advice during the designing and making sessions.
There will be prizes for the best design and the bridge that holds the largest mass. Why not give yourself a head start and have a look at the design of some famous bridges on the internet? Have you thought about a career in civil engineering? Talk to the graduates and find out more.
- Real Life Cluedo – 10 March
Y7 will find out how the South Yorkshire Police solve crimes using Science. Mr. Stephen Greene will give a demonstration talk helping us to understand how the police build up a picture and find out ‘who dunnit’. Mr. Greene has kindly agreed to stay around after school if you what to find out about a career in Forensic Science. Why not take up the opportunity?
- Flash, Bang Poetry Competition – 11 March
During the lunch hour on Wednesday Dr. Mayers will perform experiments like you’ve never seen before. More flashes and bangs than the average Chemistry lesson! Then write a poem about what you’ve seen, heard, felt and we’ll enter it into a national competition. This is a chance to combine Science and your creative writing skills and perhaps win a prize.
- Other events include lectures, slime making and the very popular rat dissection. A full programme is given below.
