Sixth Form Curriculum
Nicola Chan-Lam
Nicki gained A-levels in German, Maths, Further Maths and Physics and is now studying Maths with Actuarial Science at Manchester University.
“My teachers were always there to help and support me throughout my time at Sheffield High School before, during or after school, particularly at A-level, when the work was much more challenging. The success of other students and the disciplined atmosphere really motivated me to work hard to achieve good results.”
We offer a varied, challenging and exciting curriculum for our Sixth Form students. Almost all of them leave us for Higher Education and, typically, over 90% of them leave us for their first choice university.
In Year 12, most of our students take 4 AS-level subjects. Some take 5 subjects following consultation with staff in School and, in most cases, these girls take Further Maths as their 5th subject. As well as their 4 main subjects, students also take a course in AS-level General Studies. In addition, they have ICT lessons as part of their key skills programme and they also take part in our Enrichment Programme. All our sixth form students have a tutor with whom they have regular timetabled contact. Tutors help them to review their overall progress and to prepare for university entry.
“The School will run subjects for just one or two girls” – Good Schools Guide
In Year 13, most students continue with 3 subjects, although some study 4. In addition, students take an AS-level in Critical Thinking. Tutorial contact time is now increased as girls pursue their UCAS applications for Higher Education courses.
Students learning modern languages have, in addition, small group conversation classes to help them develop their oral and listening skills.
The following subjects are usually offered to AS-level and / or A-level –
Annabel Gledden
Annabel gained A-levels in English Language, History and Physical Education. She is now studying on a four-year degree course in liberal arts with a full sports scholarship at Santa Barbara University in California.
“The School helped me to balance playing tennis with my academic studies, helping me catch up on work I missed while away at tournaments. I also had lots of opportunities, such as being tennis captain and representing the School in sports competitions.”
