Sheffield High School – ‘Young Enterprise Centre of Excellence’
Young Enterprise is an exciting opportunity to run a real business and is open to all Year 12 students. Working in groups of around 25, the company elects directors to oversee the efficient running of the business. The company meets once a week to discuss ideas and to take decisions. Goods are produced and services provided and sold to make a profit and to serve the community. With the help of a dedicated team of HSBC Business Advisors, the students learn how to use their rapidly growing knowledge to gain a really positive learning experience.
Prizes are awarded locally to the best businesses with the best group going forward to the regional final and then to the national finals in London. The winning UK team then goes on to compete in a European competition. Our teams have consistently proved to be the best in the region.
Developing Leadership Skills
This year’s Young Enterprise team has been Bloomin Elle. Emma Hillett, Tayla Furniss, Charlotte Hale, Charlotte Hague and Harriet Hill took part in the first stage of the Young Enterprise Sheffield and Humber Competition in February. With their innovative eco-bags they set up a trade stand at Rotherham market and impressed shoppers as well as the judges. They successfully sold over twenty bags and won two prizes for ‘Best Sales Team’ and ‘Most Innovative Product’.
In May, Blooming Elle with their colourful caricature creation Eco Man enjoyed incredible success at the Young Enterprise South Yorkshire Regional Final held in the newly built Doncaster Rugby Club House Suite at Castle Park.
Eco Man, the comic book hero, was inspired by the company’s desire to make a positive environmental impact. The students hoped that they would be able to make a difference by designing a book that would encourage children of a young age to think and act in an environmentally responsible way. All the illustrations and stories were created by the Young Enterprise team during their enrichment programme in School.
On the night the judges commented upon how impressed they had been with the innovation, professionalism and enthusiasm that the students had displayed at the different events organised by the Young Enterprise Yorkshire and Humber team.
Blooming Elle were honoured to pick up the following awards:
- Teamwork award
- Environmental award
- Best Trade Stand
- Best sales and Marketing
- Best product
- Best presentation
- Best company report
- And overall company of the year
The group go on to represent South Yorkshire at the Yorkshire Regional Final at the Leeds United Football ground where the students will enjoy a formal evening dinner as a celebration of all their achievements.
Sheffield High School has long been a supporter of Young Enterprise, achieving many successes over recent years including the Best Company in South Yorkshire award in three consecutive years – 2009, 2010 and 2011!
Sheffield High School was awarded Centre of Excellence status by Young Enterprise at the regional finals in York in 2011. This was in recognition of the School’s “outstanding commitment to the promotion of enterprise and entrepreneurship education for its young people and for its engagement in a wide variety of activities”. Centres of Excellence are schools which have worked very hard at providing enterprise experiences to their young people across year groups and have developed an active partnership with Young Enterprise over a consistent number of years. Ongoing recognition comes in the form of an annually produced special logo which the School can use on internal and external communications.
The School is looking forward to more Young Enterprise success in the future!
