Sports Tour to China!

On Friday 26 October 2007, forty-seven girls from Sheffield High School flew off to China for the school’s first ever gymnastics, trampolining and badminton sports tour.

As well as playing matches, participating in coaching sessions and performing displays alongside Chinese students who are some of the world’s finest exponents at these sports, the girls visited the cities of Beijing and Xian and saw Tiananmen Square, the breathtaking Terracotta Army, and the Forbidden City which was the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese governments for almost five centuries.

There was also an excursion to the Summer Palace in Beijing, as well as to the world-famous Great Wall of China. The Great Wall protected the northern borders of the Chinese Empire during the rule of successive dynasties and is both the longest and the largest human-made structure ever. In addition, there were plenty of eagerly anticipated, compulsory shopping trips!

With the Beijing Summer Olympics just around the corner the girls had the unique opportunity to visit the Olympic Village and marvel at the facilities that will be in place there.

Megan Gibson, a Year 13 pupil who was the trampolining captain on the tour and is also a school sports captain, said: “We had an amazing trip to China. We saw world renowned acrobatic displays, and sampled the authentic Chinese culture that is so different from the way that we live in Britain.”
