Working at SHS
Sheffield High School is one of the 26 schools administered by the Girls’ Day School Trust 1872. The Trust was formed at that time by a Christian group but the schools are now non-denominational and girls are admitted irrespective of background or belief. The Trust schools are independent as a result of the phasing out of the Direct Grant scheme in 1976.
As a member of the Girls’ Day School Trust, Sheffield High School forms part of an organisation which, for well over a century, has promoted the education of girls. Early pupils were among the first women to obtain university degrees and enter the professions. We continue this pioneering tradition, attracting girls of ability and talent who can make full use of the opportunities that the School can offer.
Founded in 1878, the School is situated in Broomhill, a very pleasant area of the city between the University and the Botanical Gardens. The Junior School is housed in spacious well-equipped accommodation adjacent to the Senior School. The Sixth Form have their own centre for teaching and social purposes and a sizeable extension to these facilities was completed in 2010. For more information on this, please see Sixth Form Centre. In addition, there are good specialist facilities for science, information technology and art and music and a new Dining Hall and a Sports Hall have recently been completed, as well as an extension to both the Art and Science buildings.
Since its foundation, the School has played a part in the life of the city whilst at the same time serving a wide geographical area: girls are drawn here from the neighbouring towns of Barnsley, Chesterfield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Worksop as well as the Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire areas.
There are currently 1020 girls on roll. There is a Junior School (approx 300 girls), which caters for girls from 4-11 years of age, a Senior School (approx 500 girls) and a Sixth Form (approx 200 girls). The Sixth Form is a flourishing community, with the vast majority of students going on to University and to other establishments of Higher Education.
There are around 80 members of staff teaching at Sheffield High School. The staff are dedicated, hard working and friendly and the School and the Girls’ Day School Trust provide support and in-service training for the staff. They are paid on the Department for Children, Schools and Families teachers’ spine with a Trust extension and there is a generous allocation of responsibility posts distributed amongst the staff. The Girls’ Day School Trust participates in the Department for Children, Schools and Families Superannuation Scheme.
